Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamamı

Mimar Sinan HammamBuilt 1580Gender-SeparatedRestored

What Makes It Special

This is a working hammam designed by Mimar Sinan, the architect behind Istanbul's greatest mosques, built between 1578 and 1580 for the Ottoman admiral Kılıç Ali Pasha. After centuries of decline it was restored over seven years and reopened in 2012, a project that won a Europa Nostra heritage award. You bathe under one of the largest hammam domes in the city, on heated marble, in a room built for the sultan's navy. It is the rare historic hammam that is both architecturally serious and beautifully kept.

A 1580 hammam by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, restored over seven years and reopened in 2012. Marble, a vast domed hot room, and a full traditional scrub-and-foam ritual.

What to Expect

A traditional Turkish bath ritual in a single grand domed hot room. You arrive, change, and wrap in a peştemal. A same-sex attendant leads the ritual: you lie on the heated marble göbektaşı at the centre of the room, are scrubbed with a kese mitt, washed in mountains of olive-oil soap foam, and rinsed. Sessions are strictly gender-separated by time, women in the day and men in the evening. It is unhurried and quiet, more ceremony than spa. Book ahead, especially in season.

Good to Know

  • Strict gender separation by time. Couples cannot bathe together, and the windows are fixed, women day, men evening.
  • The full attendant ritual is a premium experience, not a cheap local bath.
  • Same-sex, peştemal-wrapped bathing with an attendant is intimate and not for everyone.
  • It is popular and space is limited. Walk-ins are uncertain. Book.

Best For

Insider Tips

1

Reserve through the official site, especially in high season.

2

Go with the full ritual, not just entry. The kese scrub and foam wash are the point.

3

Drink water before and after. The hot room is genuinely hot.

4

Bring nothing valuable you have to keep track of. You will be in a wrap and wet.

5

Pair it with Tophane and Karaköy. The hammam sits between the two.
