What Makes It Special
The octagonal Turkish bath at Rudas has been in continuous use since 1566, built when Buda was under Ottoman rule. You sit under a stone dome pierced with coloured glass, in steam rising off a central pool fed by the same thermal springs the Ottomans tapped. Most of Budapest's famous baths are grand 19th and 20th century palaces. Rudas is the one where you sit inside the actual 16th century room. Above it, a modern rooftop pool looks straight out over the Danube to the Pest skyline.
A working Ottoman Turkish bath from 1566 under an octagonal stone dome, with a rooftop pool over the Danube. Single-sex days midweek, co-ed weekends.
What to Expect
Rudas is several baths in one. The historic Turkish bath with its domed octagonal pool is the heart. There is a separate wellness wing with thermal pools at different temperatures, a Sauna World with Finnish, aroma, steam and salt rooms, and a rooftop Sky Terrace with a 36°C panorama pool. The catch is the schedule. The Turkish bath runs single-sex on weekdays: women only on Tuesday, men only on Wednesday, men in the mornings then co-ed in the afternoons on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Weekends are fully co-ed. Check the day before you go. On co-ed sessions you wear a swimsuit, on single-sex days a provided apron.
