Best Sauna Stones: Match the Size to Your Heater

The wrong bag can be the right material in the wrong size. The best sauna stones match your exact heater's approved material, dimensions, shape and load. Start with the manual, then compare suppliers.

Olivine diabase is a sensible material to investigate first. The important correction is that a blanket recommendation for 5-10 cm stones does not work for every electric heater. HUUM's CLIFF and DROP, for example, have different requirements.

HUUM's stone compatibility table gives the DROP and CLIFF figures. Harvia's stone maintenance guide specifically identifies Spirit as requiring round stones.

Material matters, but it does not establish compatibility

Harvia identifies olivine diabase as a dense, durable material that stores and releases heat. It also sells vulcanite, heat-treated stones and decorative products. That range is a reason to read the product description carefully, not to assume the bags are interchangeable. Harvia stone range.

The practical choice is straightforward: buy purpose-made sauna stones with a named material and size band, from a seller that can confirm suitability for your heater. Keep the product label and receipt with the manual.

Do not treat a landscaping label such as volcanic rock, river rock or decorative stone as a sauna specification. Harvia warns that identifying suitable stones collected in nature requires expertise and testing. A stone that resembles the picture on a sauna website is not enough evidence to use it in a heater. Rounded versus split-face stones

Neither shape is a universal winner. The choice depends on the heater's design.

For example, Harvia's PC110EE/PC110HEE-family instructions specify 5-10 cm angular split-face stones and list permitted materials. That manual also excludes light porous ceramic stones and soft soapstones. It is a model-specific instruction, not a ban on every ceramic product in every sauna. Harvia manual, section 1.1.

By contrast, HUUM recommends rounded stones for its heaters. If you are considering an aftermarket shape or material, ask the heater manufacturer to confirm it against your model number. A seller's broad compatible-with-all-heaters claim should not overrule the manual.

Decorative stones are a separate purchase

Harvia describes its white and red-granite decorative stones as a top layer, limited to one box per heater. Its maintenance article also says decorative stones should avoid contact with electric heating elements. If the display appearance is your main reason for buying them, get the approved arrangement first. You should not have to guess how the attractive top layer fits the heater's operating instructions.

Stone size and load: a model-specific comparison

HUUM publishes the following reference figures. They show why matching only the brand is insufficient. Check the manual for your exact version, including whether the specified air tunnel is installed.

For example, four 15 kg boxes supply 60 kg for a nominal 55 kg DROP load. Keep surplus suitable stones as spares instead of overfilling.

Use one unit throughout the calculation. A bag marked 15 kg and one marked 40 lb do not contain the same mass. Then check delivered cost, because stones are heavy and the cheapest sticker price may not produce the cheapest order.

Ordering formula: required load ÷ bag weight, rounded up to a whole bag. Apply it separately if your manual specifies more than one stone size. Before ordering extra, confirm how many stones are already included in the heater package.

Loading stones: follow the diagram, preserve airflow

Have the heater off and fully cool before handling its stone load. Harvia advises rinsing dust off stones, placing them carefully and leaving air passages. Do not wedge stones between elements, put the load's weight on them or build an excessive mound above the heater. Harvia loading guidance.

Use the manual's diagram for your model. If the stones cannot be placed as illustrated without forcing them, stop and confirm the size or instructions with the supplier. A bag count and an attractive photograph cannot tell you how to arrange a particular heater.

Loading also has a warranty consequence. Almost Heaven's published Harvia heater warranty excludes improper stone placement, so it is worth keeping the instructions with the purchase rather than treating stone loading as decoration. Almost Heaven warranty.

If you are replacing the heater as well as the stones, revisit the heater clearance guide. A different basket or stone load is not a reason to reuse the old installation dimensions without checking.

Check stones before buying a replacement heater

Broken stones and accumulated fragments can restrict airflow. Harvia's maintenance guidance calls for inspection at least annually, with earlier attention when debris appears. Let the heater cool, remove the stones, discard crumbling or damaged pieces and clean suitable reusable stones before reloading to the manual. Harvia maintenance guidance.

HUUM's maintenance guidance gives a useful usage-based check: once a year or after 300 heating hours. It describes settled stones and fragments as potential airflow obstructions and recommends replacing crumbling or noticeably lighter stones. HUUM maintenance guidance.

That is an inspection schedule, not a promise that every stone lasts exactly one year. Set your reminder from the heater's own instructions and usage. If an element appears damaged or the heater behaves abnormally, arrange qualified service instead of repeatedly heating it to test different stone arrangements.

Save these five details in one note: heater model, approved material, size band, shape and required load. Add the bag weight, delivered price and number of bags. That is enough to compare suitable offers without getting distracted by a premium-sounding rock name.
