Using the EIA's current rate table (18.44 cents/kWh national average, May 2026 data) and real published heater specs, a 2.26kW infrared sauna used four 30-minute sessions a week runs about $2.65 a month in North Dakota and about $10.11 in Hawaii. A 6kW traditional heater on the same schedule runs about $7.02 in North Dakota and $26.83 in Hawaii. Daily use pushes the traditional heater as high as $70 a month in Hawaii.

Search "how much does it cost to run a sauna" and you will find a dozen answers, and almost none of them agree. One seller's calculator assumes electricity costs 15 cents per kilowatt-hour. Another quotes $5 to $15 a month for infrared with no explanation of what heater or what usage that assumes. A Reddit thread on our own site research turned up owners reporting anywhere from $14 to $67 a month for the same basic setup type.
That spread is not a mystery. It comes from two numbers nobody sources: the electricity rate and the heater's actual power draw. Fix those two numbers with real data and the running cost stops being a guess.

Why the Numbers Online Do Not Agree
Look at the sauna cost calculators and blog posts that show up for this search. Most give a monthly range with no visible source for the electricity rate behind it. One widely used sauna cost calculator states its worked example runs on "the US average electricity rate of $0.15/kWh." That figure is not current. The U.S. Energy Information Administration's own rate table, the federal agency that tracks this, put the national average residential price at 18.44 cents per kWh for May 2026 data (released July 23, 2026), roughly 23% above the $0.15 figure that calculator uses as its baseline.
That gap alone would throw off a monthly estimate by close to a quarter. It gets worse once you factor in where you live. The EIA's same table shows residential electricity running about 52.00 cents per kWh in Hawaii and about 33.25 cents per kWh in California, against about 16.44 cents in Texas and about 13.61 cents in North Dakota. A generic national-average calculator is not just imprecise for a Hawaii or California buyer, it is off by 2 to 3x.
Electricity prices have also been climbing steadily, which is part of why older cost guides run low. The EIA's own year-over-year tracking shows the national annual average residential price rose from 16.0 cents/kWh in 2023 to 16.5 cents/kWh in 2024, and the May 2026 figure above is meaningfully higher again. A number that felt right in 2023 is stale now.
The Formula
You do not need a calculator tool to get a real number. You need three inputs:
Monthly cost = heater kW × hours of use per month × your electricity rate (cents per kWh, converted to dollars)
Heater kW: the power rating on the heater's spec sheet, not the sauna's overall size. A 2-person infrared cabin and a 2-person traditional cabin can use heaters that differ by 3x in power draw.
Hours of use per month: a session length times sessions per week times roughly 4.3 weeks. A 30-minute session, 4 times a week, is about 8.6 hours a month. Add heat-up time, since the heater draws power then too, though usually at a lower average draw than full operating temperature.
Your electricity rate: check a recent bill or look up your state on the EIA's residential rate table, not a number quoted in a blog post that does not say when it was current.
Two Real Heaters, Worked Out
Instead of a made-up "average sauna," here is the math for two specific, currently sold heaters with published specs, at a 30-minute session, 4 times a week (about 8.6 hours a month), across four representative states.
Infrared example: Clearlight Sanctuary 2. Clearlight's own published spec for this 2-person full-spectrum infrared sauna lists 2,260 watts (2.26kW) total draw at 120V, 18.83A.
Traditional example: HUUM Drop 6.0. HUUM's own published spec for this heater lists a 6.0kW power rating, sized for a 5 to 9 cubic meter sauna room (roughly a 2 to 3-person cabin). Harvia, the other major heater brand, publishes the same rule of thumb on its own site: plan for about 1kW of heater power per cubic meter of room volume, which lands a small home sauna in a similar 4.5 to 9kW band depending on room size.

Across every combination in these two tables, from the lightest user in the cheapest state to the heaviest user in the most expensive one, the range runs about $2.65 to $70.43 a month. That brackets the $14 to $67 range Reddit owners report in real-world usage, which sits in the middle of this spread rather than at either extreme.
Why Infrared's "Cheaper to Run" Claim Holds, But Not by as Much as Sellers Imply
The traditional heater in this comparison draws about 2.7x the power of the infrared example. That tracks with the general rule that infrared units run lower total wattage than a comparably sized traditional heater. But the gap in your actual bill depends more on your state's rate and your usage habit than on the type you pick. A Hawaii buyer running an infrared sauna daily can end up paying more per month than a North Dakota buyer running a traditional sauna a few times a week. State and habit move the number more than infrared-versus-traditional does on its own.
This also means "infrared is basically free to run" oversells it. At Hawaii or California rates, daily infrared use is a real monthly line item, not a rounding error, even though it stays cheaper than the traditional alternative at the same usage.
What to Actually Do With This
Get your heater's kW rating before you estimate anything. It is on the spec sheet or the product page's electrical section. Without it, you are guessing.
Look up your own state's current rate on the EIA table, not a number from a 2023 blog post or a calculator that does not disclose its assumption.
Multiply it out for your real habit, not a marketing example. If you plan on daily use, use daily numbers, not the "a few times a week" case most cost calculators quietly assume.
Sanity-check your result. The worked tables above span about $2.65 to $70.43 a month across heater size, state, and usage habit, and real owner reports commonly land in the $14 to $67 band in the middle of that spread.
